TWELVE

The next day, Jonna sat in a room at the county sheriff’s department, talking to Susan Staples, the forensic artist they’d brought in. Exhaustion interfered with her ability to accurately describe the man’s face, even though it was forever etched in her brain.

Now...now that her memories of that day in Miami had returned, seeing him again had triggered it to all come rushing back.

Ian stood back in the corner, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Last night they reviewed the lodge’s security footage and came up empty. Then they’d taken turns staying awake and on guard in case her predators returned. The perpetrators hadn’t shown up. She was relieved, but only to a point. That could mean they had come up with a new strategy to get to her. And next time, she’d have no way of knowing how or when they’d strike.

A chill crawled over her.

Describing the guy sent her mind right back to that moment when he pulled the trigger, three years ago in Miami. It was terrifying. No wonder her mind had so thoroughly blocked the details. But now she relived it.

A warm, strong hand gripped her shoulder. Ian said nothing, but his reassurances came through his touch loud and clear.

She closed her eyes. Tried to picture every detail she could think of about her attacker’s face as she described him.

“Okay,” Susan said. “I think I have it. Tell me, is this the man?”

She held up a detailed sketch.

Jonna recoiled as images from last night and from Miami pummeled her.

Ian took a step toward her. She subtly eyed him, warning him off. She would be okay.

Gathering her composure, she slowly nodded. “That’s him exactly. Even the look in his eyes is right.”

“I’ll give this to the sheriff and, who knows, they could have him in custody by the day’s end.”

Jonna wished she could be that enthusiastic, but this man had lived in the criminal world much too long. It wouldn’t be that easy.

“Are we free to go now?” Ian asked.

“Let me ask the sheriff,” Susan said. “He might need to talk to you.”

Jonna pressed her face into her arms on the table. Ian pulled up a chair to sit next to her, much too close. He acted like he was more than a bodyguard. The problem was, Jonna didn’t mind. She needed him. More than she would ever have thought. But she couldn’t need him too much. Had to protect her heart.

God, how do I do that?

“I’m sorry you had to relive that moment again, Jonna,” he said.

She lifted her face to gaze into eyes much too blue, and almost wished she hadn’t. “How did you know that I relived it?”

“I’ve been there. There’s a moment that I relive far too often.”

Oh, Ian... She pressed her small hand over his much larger one. Felt the warmth there. She wished there was something she could do to wipe away those memories for him. To ease the pain.

“You really need to forgive yourself, Ian.”

Dimples formed in his cheeks as they lifted.
